Course Information

Core to every great photograph is proper focus. Modern cameras have highly advanced and fast autofocus systems but this is not the key to perfect focus. Understanding how focus is achieved, and how to control it, is of critical importance to every photographer.

The “right” focus can mean a lot of different things; depending on the photographer, their intent, and the situation. Many skills and techniques must be mastered to cover all the possible situations. Getting your lens focused on the right subject, and setting the correct aperture, is just the start. Mastering focus and sharpness requires a deep understanding of a wide variety of topics.

This course thoroughly covers two different, but highly-related, topics of focusing and sharpness. The basics of aperture control, focus modes, and focus areas are covered in unusual depth. Many different aspects of the photographic process affect the focus and sharpness of an image such as: aperture, focus mode, focus area, lenses, image stabilization, shutter speed, depth-of-field, and more; all of which are throughly covered in this course.

Focus and sharpness are important, if not critical, because there is no way to fix or repair an image that is not in-focus.

Post-production software has given the photographer many controls, but fixing an out-of-focus photo isn’t one of them. This may be done in movies or TV crime shows, but it doesn’t exist in the real world; either you get it right before you take the shot, or it will forever be wrong.

No matter what your preferred genre of photography, you need to master focusing and sharpness. This course will help you achieve a greater understanding of both basic and advanced techniques, teaching you the skills necessary for achieving your photographic goals.
