Taking great photos is easy when you have a well-rounded photographic education.

FOCUSING & SHARPNESS: THE COMPLETE GUIDE

Core to every great photograph is proper focus. Modern cameras have highly advanced and fast autofocus systems but this is not the key to perfect focus. Understanding how focus is achieved, and how to control it, is of critical importance to every photographer.

The “right” focus can mean a lot of different things; depending on the photographer, their intent, and the situation. Many skills and techniques must be mastered to cover all the possible situations. Getting your lens focused on the right subject, and setting the correct aperture, is just the start. Mastering focus and sharpness requires a deep understanding of a wide variety of topics.

This course thoroughly covers two different, but highly-related, topics of focusing and sharpness. The basics of aperture control, focus modes, and focus areas are covered in unusual depth. Many different aspects of the photographic process affect the focus and sharpness of an image such as: aperture, focus mode, focus area, lenses, image stabilization, shutter speed, depth-of-field, and more; all of which are throughly covered in this course.

Focus and sharpness are important, if not critical, because there is no way to fix or repair an image that is not in-focus.

Post-production software has given the photographer many controls, but fixing an out-of-focus photo isn’t one of them. This may be done in movies or TV crime shows, but it doesn’t exist in the real world; either you get it right before you take the shot, or it will forever be wrong.

No matter what your preferred genre of photography, you need to master focusing and sharpness. This course will help you achieve a greater understanding of both basic and advanced techniques, teaching you the skills necessary for achieving your photographic goals.

    PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPOSURE: THE COMPLETE GUIDE

At the core of photography are shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO settings. As beginners we learn the basics, add to that from our own experience, and move on to other topics. This class is designed for the photographer that wants to take that core tenet of photographic knowledge - and master it. This class takes a deep-dive into the elements involved in creating the perfect exposure and covers all relevant topics related to the subject with exacting detail.

Class starts off, like many other photography classes, covering the three key elements of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, but with an uncommon deep dive into each of the topics. The latest advances in camera technology with stacked sensors and electronic shutters have added a new element to the old topic, and this class has all that covered.

The middle portions of the class look at how light is properly read and how to create a perfect exposure. A wide variety of step-by-step examples will show you the right exposure process for a variety of situations including:

    • freezing action
    • blurring motion
    • maximum depth-of-field
    • shallow depth-of-field
    • maximum sharpness
    • portraits
    • action
    • landscapes
    • high-key
    • low-key

    ...and more.

The final sections will take you deeper into solving a variety of exposure challenges. Working in poor light, unusual light and terrible light all have a number of solutions outlined and explained. The artificial light section will show the relationship between ambient and strobe light, and how to navigate one of the most difficult exposure challenges you are likely to face. A final section on post production will detail the common steps you can make to optimize any exposure you have made, as well has the limits of what can be done.

This class is not designed for a particular level of photographer, but rather one that wants to understand the core elements of photography, and completely master it. It’s assumed that most students will have a base understanding of exposure, and this class is purpose built to take those skills to the highest level.
